Tips and Tools For Making Ashtray Molds For Resin

Ashtray molds for resin have become very popular over the past few years. Resin is slowly replacing clay for making molds as it's both easier and cheaper to work with. However, not all people are comfortable working with silicone. This has led to an increased interest in learning how to make their own ashtray molds for resin.

There are several types of plastic that can be used to make ashtray molds. If you're interested in making these yourself, then you will need to determine which one will work best for your project. The easiest type to work with is a simple translucent plastic. They're available in clear colors (blue, green, purple, white), which will help you clearly see what you're doing. However, some of these don't have as great an opaque quality so they won't really show what you're doing.

These aren't hard to make at all. All you need is hot air and a blow dryer. Once you're ready, you're going to need to start by heating up your air compressor or air cooler. Next, you're going to need to add a medium density fiber cloth, such as an aluminum foil, a piece of paper, or a card to act as a lens.

When you're working with an old CD or other media, take your time and carefully lay it flat on the ground. You may need to do this several times until you get it just right. After that, carefully apply the medium density fiber cloth to the front and side of the CD. If the cloth does stick, simply take another piece of the cloth and gently work it into the grooves. It should be very easy to do. Once you've done that, you're going to want to spray your resin mixture onto the medium density fiber cloth.

Using a blow dryer, evenly spread the ashtray over the surface of the CD. If you want it to look more like a music box, use the fan in the air. It may take several passes but the end result is worth it. Once the ashtray is completely dry, you'll want to quickly apply another layer of medium density fiber cloth to protect it. The last step is to assemble your ashtray molds, which will take a bit of practice but it shouldn't be that difficult.

Before you're ready to fire it up, you're going to want to make sure your batteries are fresh. This is important because you don't want the finished product to blow up before you're ready to display it! Once the ashtray is lit, simply walk away. Your finished CD will be waiting, beautifully lit and ready to play. It's that easy!
